Lost during all the draft talk, the signing of a long snapper, rumors surrounding Julius Peppers and Jason Taylor, and the Brady Rule, the Patriots lost a charter member. Lou Saban, the first coach in the franchise’s history, passed away last week. I believe he was laid to rest Saturday. For those who remember Saban, you may wonder why does he deserve mention. Saban was just 7-12 in his abbreviated tenure as coach. His record isn’t why Patriots fans should appreciate Saban, but that he took the chance with the upstart franchise. Back in 1960, the Patriots were the last team to join the American Football League. Owner Billy Sullivan chose Saban to coach his franchise playing out of Boston. Saban was just 5-9 his first year, but he felt they were building something good. Unfortunately Lou didn’t get the chance to see his work bloom.
