Duke needed a big statement win against Maryland on Saturday to get their season back on track. They did that, and then some, with their 20-point victory at home. More importantly, the Blue Devils found a third offensive weapon to help fill the void left when Ryan Kelly went out with an injury three weeks ago. Rasheed Sulaimon was slumping until Coach Mike Krzyzewski decided to bench him against Georgia Tech. Since (and including) that game, the freshman wing guard has averaged 18.7 PPG. Kelly was averaging 13.4 on the season, so Sulaimon’s play of late has more than made up for Kelly’s production. Sulaimon notched his career high (25 points) in Saturday’s game against the Terrapins. This also matched the Duke freshman scoring record held by a number of players including Austin Rivers last season. Duke needs this kind of production out of their small forward slot, where Sulaimon is playing somewhat out of position. Listed at 6’4″ on Duke’s official roster, he is often tasked with de...

K: Team adapting without Kelly

Coach K says a lot has changed for his team since Ryan Kelly went down, but the Blue Devils are adapting better and better.

Freshmen stepping up for No. 5 Duke

Two freshmen seem to be figuring things out at the right time for No. 5 Duke. Guard Rasheed Sulaimon has rediscovered his shooting touch after a brief slump. And now that he's a starter, forward Amile Jefferson is doing all the little things that have been asked of him. With the rookie tandem contributing more, the new-look Blue Devils (17-2, 4-2 ACC) hope they can keep moving...

Is Sulaimon the answer to Duke's offensive woes without Kelly?

Duke needed a big statement win against Maryland on Saturday to get their season back on track. They did that, and then some, with their 20-point victory at home. More importantly, the Blue Devils found a third offensive weapon to help fill the void left when Ryan Kelly went out with an injury four weeks ago. Rasheed Sulaimon was slumping until Coach Mike Krzyzewski decided to bench...

#1 Duke 84 Maryland 64 Highlights

Duke bounced back extremely well from their loss to Miami against Maryland on Saturday, giving Maryland their largest margin of defeat on the season 84-64. The previous largest defeat for the Terrapins on the year was ten points to UNC and the Blue Devils doubled that with ease. They used a 16-6 run midway through the second half to blow the game open and trailed for less than two...

#5 Duke 75 Wake Forest 70 Four Factors

The game was as sloppy as the weather was outside, but in the end Duke came out with their first win on the road in conference after going 8-0 last season. While that figure may be overrated, this team needed to prove to themselves and the rest of the college basketball world that they could go into a hostile atmosphere and come away with a victory. After Rasheed Sulaimon made a...

#1 Duke 84 Maryland 64 Four Factors

I haven’t done a four factors post in a while, mainly due to a lack of time. It has nothing to do with Duke’s resounding win over Maryland, I promise, although it is a little easier to write a post after an efficient offensive performance like the Blue Devils put forth on Saturday. For some background on the four factors, check out the post I did following the Kentucky game...

Duke

Duke’s struggles since Ryan Kelly went down to injury are well documented. Everyone has basically admitted that this isn’t the same team without its 6-foot-11 stretch four and they clearly aren’t. Duke continues to search for consistency as Ryan Kelly’s return remains the center of attention Growing pains were and are to an extent, still to be expected but just when...

Blue Devils searching for new chemistry

Mike Krzyzewski didnt really implement major changes in his basketball teams approach until after it played several games without injured senior forward Ryan Kelly. The coach wanted to see what his team looked like with Josh Hairston and then Amile Jefferson starting in Kellys spot in the lineup and exactly what his teams new weaknesses and strengths were. Like any good manager...

Freshmen stepping up at right time for Duke

Rasheed Sulaimon and Amile Jefferson are playing big roles as Duke adjusts to life without Ryan Kelly.

Duke rebounds with big win over Maryland

By Josh Evans - How would Duke respond after their beat down put to them by Miami this past Wednesday night? That was the question of the day, and boy did Duke respond! Duke responded in stellar fashion. Duke was able to beat the Maryland Terrapins who boasted a much taller front line than Duke 84-64. Right from the opening tip, Duke’s energy was high, and their intensity was...

Duke Morning F.I.S.T. – Beat Wake Edition Part Deux

It’s hard to believe that Duke will be playing Wake Forest for the second time already this season, when they still haven’t met some of their conference opponents once. Such is life with the unbalanced schedule. The Blue Devils will be looking to get their first road ACC win (and first road win at all) tonight in Winston-Salem. The somewhat surprising Demon Deacons have yet to...

Duke Morning F.I.S.T. – January 31 Edition

The regular season is starting down the home stretch, and Duke has now played their first conference opponent twice. The Blue Devils swept the season series with the Demon Deacons, but it wasn’t easy. Down by 1 late in the game, guards Seth Curry and Rasheed Sulaimon pushed Duke over the top after Mason Plumlee had virtually carried them the whole game. The senior forward scored...

Duke Morning F.I.S.T. – January 29 Edition

Duke slipped from the #1 ranking yesterday, but didn’t fall far as they are the #5 team in the country according to both the AP Poll and Coaches’ Poll. This marks the 106th consecutive week that the Blue Devils have been in the AP Top 10, a staggering statement of consistency for Mike Krzyzewski’s program. They’ll seek their first road win tomorrow night against Wake Forest...

College Basketball Podcast: Duke beat writer Laura Keeley Discusses the 2013 Blue Devils

As we march our way deeper into the 2013 college basketball season, there isn’t a team that remains more interesting to casual fans than the Duke Blue Devils. Some people love them, some people hate them, but as is the case most years, no team is more interesting than Coach K’s bunch.   To listen to the podcast on this website, click the green box above To download the...
