Since landing in New Zealand a couple of months ago, former Cardinal shooting guard Jerry Smith has propelled himself to the top of the National Basketball League player rankings. Smith spent some time in the NBA D-League, before signing with the Waikato Pistons in April. In 13 games for the Pistons, Smith has averaged 19.4 points. 4.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.7 steals.
Jerry didn’t spend a lot of time at the point guard position while at Louisville, but he has been the primary floor general for the Pistons, since joining the team. If Waikato for some reason decides not to sign Smith for next season, there is a good chance other teams will inquire for his services. According to Ian Anderson of the Waikato Times, the New Zealand Breakers have shown interest in signing Smith for the 2011/2012 season as their main import player.
