NEW ORLEANS - MARCH 20: Coach John Calipari of the Kentucky Wildcats talks to his team during the second round of the 2010 NCAA men's basketball tournament at the New Orleans Arena on March 20, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Dave Martin/Getty Images)
John Calipari and his Kentucky Wildcats suffered a monumental 30-point loss to the rival Tennessee Volunteers last Saturday. So, how did Coach Calipari whip his young Wildcats into shape for their next game against the Vanderbilt Commodores? Dodgeball.Yes, Coach Calipari had his team engaged in an organized dodgeball game between players and coaches on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, they hosted the Commodores at Rupp Arena. The light-hearted game must have resonated well with Calipari's squad because the Cats proceeded to deliver a 74-70 conference victory over Vanderbilt. However, it is important to note that it may not have been the "signature win" Kentucky was looking for to help improve their NCAA Tournament resume. Vandy is now 10-15 overall and 4-9 in conference play. The Cats are 18-8 and 9-4, respectively."After they were done, Calipari said, 'why don't you go on the basketball court and have that much fun playing basketball.'" Naturally, the players loved the pregame ritual."It wipes everything out," freshman Willie Cauley-Stein said. "That's kind of what it did. It was like, 'Oh, dodgeball!' Right when he said dodgeball, anything you was thinking was gone."Calipari said he wore a helmet during the game since he knows that some players may been targeting him."I ain't dumb, I know some of you want to throw at me, but don't believe I don't want to throw at some of you dudes too," Calipari told the players.Via USA TODAY
