So, news first leaked of a new “Wildcat Code” at the University of Kentucky when incoming recruit Dominique Hawkins mentioned it several days ago to Adam Himmelsbach of the Louisville Courier-Journal. Here was the explanation given in the piece: Hawkins said the offseason program is thorough and detailed, down to a point-based reward system called the “Wildcat Code.” He said players accumulate one to four points per day for things such as sitting at the front of the class, showing teachers their notes afterward and displaying extra hustle in basketball workouts. If players do not accumulate 80 points by a certain date, Hawkins said, they will not be allowed to use the team locker room. If they reach the 80-point mark, they could get their own room in the team dormitory. When they reach 100, they receive a jersey. “I’m doing all right; I think I’ve got 18 or 19 points right now,” Hawkins said. “The highest is 23. Willie has that. He’s overachieving.” Today, Coach Cal decided he would tweet out some clarification over the code: The first rule of the Wildcat Code is: You do not talk about the Wildcat Code. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) June 17, 2013 The second rule of the Wildcat Code is: You do not talk about the Wildcat Code. LOL. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) June 17, 2013 Of course, he proceeded to elaborate a bit on the actual code: In all seriousness, I’m not mad at @Dhawk_25 at all for talking about it. He’s a good kid who is doing well so far. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) June 17, 2013 All I can tell you about the Code right now is that it’s geared to make these guys earn everything. Nothing is given; everything is earned. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) June 17, 2013 The guys get a grade every day, one for academics and another for physical development. The two grades are then added together. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) June 17, 2013 We will tell you what they earned later in the summer. Can the #BBN wait until then? — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) June 17, 2013 This is actually a pretty cool system to help motivate players. Maybe this is a reason why families trust their children with Coach Cal?
