NEW ORLEANS - MARCH 20: Coach John Calipari of the Kentucky Wildcats talks to his team during the second round of the 2010 NCAA men's basketball tournament at the New Orleans Arena on March 20, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Dave Martin/Getty Images)

Kentucky fans are ready to get the 2013-14 season kicked off tonight against UNC-Asheville. Last year, the Wildcats’ play was simply unacceptable in the eyes of most of the Big Blue Nation, as UK failed to make the NCAA Tournament and then suffered a first round loss in the NIT to Robert Morris.  This year is expected to be much different, however, as Kentucky is ranked No. 1 in both the preseason AP Poll and USA Today Coaches’ Poll. The Wildcats have an incredible amount of freshman talent, led by forward Julius Randle, who has already drawn comparisons to LeBron James. But just hours before tonight’s season debut, head coach John Calipari is trying to temper expectations just a bit and remind fans that it will take this UK team time to gel: We are all going to have to be patient with this group, ESPECIALLY me. We have four months to get this thing right. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) November 8, 2013 And if you want me to let you in on a little secret, we’re not right yet. Let’s enjoy the ride. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) November 8, 2013 Integrating a large number of freshmen is never easy (last year is an obvious example), so Calipari is probably right to stress patience. There will be a fair share of young mistakes made by the players — there always is — but when this team eventually hits its stride, look out.
