TEAMS: Duke Blue Devils, Wake Forest Demon Deacons, North Carolina State Wolfpack
As if Duke’s frontcourt wasn’t thin enough with Ryan Kelly out indefinitely, Josh Hairston has been declared doubtful for a huge game on Thursday against NC State that will go a long way in determining the ACC race and Duke’s potential seeding in the NCAA Tournament. In an injury I can’t recall ever seeing keeping a player out of action, Hairston has been diagnosed with an arm infection following a cut he sustained during the Wake Forest game. You can see his arm bandaged in the picture to the right, and I can only guess that whatever Deacons player was responsible for the cut is an unclean derelict that has no business being on a basketball court.
Regardless of what Hairston has been officially diagnosed with (it must be bad to potentially keep him out of action), the Blue Devils will miss his defense on the blocks against one of the better frontcourts in the conference in CJ Leslie and Richard Howell. In the eight-point loss to the Wolfpack in January, Hairston started and played ...

1980 letter from Coach K to Michael Jordan
When Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski was informed that Michael Jordan (sorry, Mike Jordan) had chosen not to attend Duke, he wrote the following letter to him. As we know, MJ chose to go to school up the road at North Carolina. And as they say, the rest is history. Coach K eventually graduated from using a typewriter to a word processor on a computer (gasp!)…and became a pretty...
Mike Krzyzewski Wrote Michael Jordan, Called Him ‘A Fine Young Man’ After Jordan Turned Down Duke for UNC (Photo)
With college recruitment and signing days becoming as televised and talked-about as games themselves, it’s hard to remember a time when picking a school was a much less formal process. A letter between Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and former recruit Michael Jordan (who ended up playing for rival North Carolina, of course) shows just how different it used to be. Krzyzewski was among...
Duke Morning F.I.S.T. – February 6 Edition
Before yesterday, the biggest injury news ramping up to Duke’s battle with NC State on Thursday was whether or not Lorenzo Brown would be healthy enough to play. Then came the news that Josh Hairston is struggling with an arm infection after getting cut during the Wake Forest game. With Ryan Kelly already out, Duke’s frontcourt is perilously thin heading into a matchup against...
Mike Krzyzewski’s Letter to Michael Jordan After He Chose UNC over Duke (Photo)
I am going to assume this is a form letter that Coach K sent out to all the recruits who chose a different school than Duke.
Probably an assistant hands him a stack, he signs them and they mail them all out. I bet there are 1000s of former college basketball players who are reading this now and saying to themselves.
“Wait…I thought I was the only one who got a personalized letter...
Duke Morning F.I.S.T. – February 5 Edition
The Wednesday after the Super Bowl is usually the time when Duke plays UNC in their first game of the season. Due to a longer ACC schedule this year, that game won’t take place until a week from tomorrow. The better matchup this year will likely be with NC State this year anyways, and they come into Cameron on Thursday looking to right the ship. Until then, get caught up on what’s...
The latest updates on Ryan Kelly from his teammates and coaches
While there is basically radio silence coming from Duke on the nature of Ryan Kelly’s injury, his progress in recovering from it and a timetable for his return, there are bits of news coming out of interviews and media appearances by his teammates and coaches. Some of this is stretching it a bit, but with no actual news it’s all we have to go on.
Mason Plumlee used the word when...
Duke Morning F.I.S.T. – Beat NC State Edition
Duke’s first loss of the year came at the hands of NC State on January 12th. It was also the team’s first game without Ryan Kelly. Two games after that was Duke’s worst of the season as they suffered a demoralizing defeat at the hands of the now Top 10 Miami Hurricanes. Since then though, the Blue Devils seemed to have righted the ship while NC State has lost four of its last...
Plumlee scores 30; Duke tops State
Mason Plumlee scored 30 points on just 11 shots as Duke beat NC State by 13 in Cameron on Thursday night.
Passing thoughts: Breaking down Quinn Cook’s assists
Quinn Cook is having one of the better seasons in Duke Basketball point guard history, which is a huge statement to make considering some of the players to have come before him. If the season were to stop today, Cook would be in the record books as the 8th-most prolific passer at Duke with 6.2 assists per game. The only seasons in front of him are four of Bobby Hurley’s, one of...

Duke announces 20-player signing class
Duke rarely signs the highest-rated recruits in football. Coach David Cutcliffe believes he's bringing in the right ones.
The Blue Devils announced their 20-man recruiting class Wednesday, and on paper it looks like a typical Duke class. It's full of players the recruiting services rate as two- or three-star prospects.
Cutcliffe said he would call this ''a class...
Duke looks to exact revenge on NC State tonight at 9PM
By Ray Horn – Duke is coming off their most impressive performance in ACC play, a 79-60 win at Florida State. The Blue Devils shot the ball extremely well and the defense was suffocating for most of the game. Now comes the NC State Wolfpack. Just to refresh you on what the Wolfpack do as a team they are terrific offensively, especially in transition. Their weakness is on...
Duke Adds a 'Class of Play Makers'
A very happy David Cutcliffe did his best to imitate the excitement and unpredictability of national signing day by bringing out the helmets of several different programs and pretending to choose.
David Cutcliffe pulls out one of several helmets as he re-enacted a typical signing day decision.
It was no real surprise that Cutcliffe chose the Blue Devils helmet over Cincinnati...
#5 Duke 79 Florida State 60 Highlights
It’s no secret that Duke has been attempting to find their offensive rhythm ever since Ryan Kelly went out with an injured right foot in the first half of their game against Clemson on January 8th. In Tallahassee on Saturday, they did that and then some, posting their highest Offensive Efficiency (133.9) and Points Per Possession (1.34) of the season. Led by incredibly accurate...
PG's status uncertain for NC State's visit to Duke
Duke finally figured out how to play without Ryan Kelly. North Carolina State might have to do the same if Lorenzo Brown isn't healthy yet.
The Wolfpack visit the fourth-ranked Blue Devils for a rematch Thursday night, and while Duke knows it will be without one of its best players, N.C. State could be in the same situation if Brown's ankle isn't healthy enough to go...
