Louisiana Tech’s roster overhaul continued Friday when the school announced the signings of a pair of junior college players to add to the growing 2014 signing class. Qiydar Davis (Indian Hills Community College) and Merrill Holden (Pratt Community College) become the sixth and seventh additions to Tech's class, which already inked five high school players during the fall signing period. Davis, a 6-foot-6 swingman, will have two years of eligibility remaining, while Holden, a versatile 6-8 forward, has three years to play. “We thought that our backcourt was pretty set and at the 5 we were pretty set,” Tech coach Michael White said. “This spring, the biggest characteristics we were targeting was defensive ability, versatility and athleticism and kids from successful programs. Both these guys can play a couple of different positions. They are very good defenders and very good rebounders.” As White indicated, David and Holden will add length and athleticism to the four starters Tech returns. The backcourt is set with Speedy Smith, Raheem Appleby and Alex Hamilton all back, but with senior forwards Cordarius Johnson and Chris Anderson graduating, along with the departure of Isaiah Massey, Gilbert Talbot and Stojan Gjuorski, the Bulldogs needed some bodies to compete with center Michale Kyser. Davis and Holden will likely battle with 6-8 sophomore Erik McCree, who sat out last season after transferring from Murray State, and redshirt freshman Leo Edwards for playing time. “We have nine new faces with the four veterans,” White said. “It’s a unique mix of experience and inexperience. We’ll be a very deep, athletic team. There will be a lot of competition in practice.” Since Tech lost just four seniors and is bringing in the seven signees, some other roster moves were needed.
