Alex Kirk had 15 points and nine rebounds, and No. 14 New Mexico clinched the Mountain West Conference regular season title with a 53-42 victory over Wyoming on Saturday. The Lobos (25-4, 12-2 MWC) went 21 for 27 from the free throw line in winning or sharing the title for the fifth time in the last six seasons. Cameron Bairstow contributed 13 points and nine rebounds, and Kendall Williams had six assists for the Lobos. Riley Grabau scored 14 points for the Cowboys (18-11, 4-11). New Mexico closed the first half on a 13-6 run after Kendall Williams picked off a pass deep in the Wyoming end and turned it into a dunk just before the buzzer for a 25-19 lead. Typically fans hold their breath when center Alex Kirk of the New Mexico Lobos takes a three-point attempt. The Pit held its collective breath when Kirk took his last trey with 1:32 left in UNM’s pivotal game against the San Diego State Wednesday night then exploded in delight when he buried the shot and the Lobos went on to defeat the visiting Aztecs 70-60 before a sold out crowd of 15,414.

The New Mexico Lobos did not have an easy time of claiming their share of the Mountain West Conference regular season title on Saturday – the gritty, gutsy Wyoming Cowboys made sure of that.
