Timothy Easley – Associated Press The first half wasn’t exactly what we expected to see from the defending national champions, but midway through the second half Louisville was able to pull away from College-of-Charleston and cruise to a 70-48 win in their season opener. “We were a little tight and lost our responsibilities constantly on defense and I knew this was going to be a tough ball game,” Pitino said following the game when asked about the shaky first half. “The second half was a lot more of the qualities that we saw last year. We were a humble and hungry team. We played that way in the second half and that boom quality came back because we played like a starving dog.” Russ Smith led the way with 21-points on 7-of-17 shooting. He also finished with five assists and just two turnovers. Chris Jones had a solid Cardinal debut with 12-points, five assists and six rebounds.
