The Cardinal Connect:
Stephan Van Treese
We’re now two weeks removed from the 2012-13 College Basketball season. The Louisville Basketball program captured their third national title in school history and the first since 1986. The 2013 season is one that we’ll be talking about until the end of time, but it’s never too early to start talking about next season.
Every division 1 men’s basketball program is allotted 13 scholarships per year. At this point, Louisville will bring in four scholarship players next season. As of right now, four players that were on scholarship at the beginning of the 2012-13 season are gone. That number could jump to five if Russ Smith decides to enter the NBA draft.
Scholarship Players Returning:
-Stephan Van Treese
Listed as a Sr. on the 2012-13 roster, but UofL announced in March that they expect SVT to return for one more year. He’ll get a redshirt missing all but two games in 2011-12 season.

Why should he stay? Anyone would be crazy to not have a guy return that was in many Player of the Year conversations. Louisville needs him. The incoming class has some good guards and guys who can create, but you never truly know what you are going to get until they get on campus (see UK last season). So, with that, you would have a great sense of security going into...
The University of Louisville informed local media outlets that Rick Pitino will hold a press conference on Wednesday afternoon at 1 PM. The release also says that Russ Smith will join Pitino at the media briefing if has made a decision on his future at that point.

There are some that assume Louisville guard Russ Smith has already made up his mind about his future and instead of sharing the news with the public, he’s just waiting to share it with Rick Pitino first.
I have no inside source with Russ Smith, but in my opinion, I don’t think he really knows for sure if he wants to return to college for one more year or go ahead and start his...
