Mariners, "King" Felix Hernandez Reach 1-year, $3.8M Deal. Avoid Arbitration

They (once again), couldn’t reach a multi-year agreement, but a deal has been reached, none the less. The Seattle Mariners have signed starting pitcher Felix Hernandez to a one-year, $3.8 million deal, thus avoiding arbitration. Hernandez went 9-11 last season with a 3.45 ERA and 175Ks. His nine wins were a team high for the Mariners who posted an abysmal 61-101 record (.377) and a total player payroll in excess of $110 million. His major league service time of 3.06 ranks him 8th youngest of the 19 starting pitchers who filed for salary arbitration on 1/15. Hernandez is the fifth salary arbitration eligible player to reach agreement or sign after the filings were released on Thursday. Cole Hamels, Kevin Youkilis, Darren Oliver, and Greg Dobbs are the others.
