Ashton Pankey scored a career-high 17 points as Maryland held off upset-minded Radford 65-60 Friday night.
Pankey made 6 of 8 from the field, including a free throw followed by back-to-back dunks as Maryland broke a 45-45 tie to take the lead for good with just over 10 minutes to play. With a 13-6 run, Maryland ran the lead to 58-51 with 3:24 left.
Terrell Stoglin, the leading scorer in the ACC, made just 5 of 18 from the floor and failed to score over the game's first 18 minutes.
He finished with 16 points, however, and his free throws iced the game with 7 seconds to play, providing the final margin.
James Padgett added 10 points for Maryland (7-3).
R.J. Price had a career-high 22 points and fellow freshman Javonne Green added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Highlanders (3-11), who lost their 10th straight.
The last of Price's five 3-pointers closed Radford to 61-58 with 1:21 to play, but Stoglin hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to five points.
