PLAYERS: Eric Hayes
TEAMS: Maryland Terrapins

It was announced today that Eric Hayes has joined the basketball team as a graduate assistant.  Who doesn't love that?  A coach's son, Hayes is the kind of player who you just knew would find his way into the coaching ranks himself one day.  Well, that day has come and I couldn't be happier.

He knows the game like the back of his hand, he's great with the fundamentals, and he's beginning a journey that could end with him being the Head Coach at Maryland one day.  The Terps needs guys like Hayes to enter the coaching ranks.  Just looking at the coaching tree that guys like Coach K and Bobby Knight built (yes I realize it's actually the same tree).  You get my point though.

The Terps don't exactly have a deep bench in that department.  Sure, Dave Dickerson, Keith Booth, and Lonergan are floating around, but none of them are exactly interviewing for top flight jobs. Hayes has potential as a former point guard and coach's son.  He's also got the right demeanor to be a coach.

It's also nice to see how easy it is for Coach Turgeon to embrace the old regime.  He's always tipped his cap to Gary Williams (and rightly so of course), but he doesn't have to hire his former players when there are plenty of Turgeon's former players out there.  Classy. It's just a great move all the way around.
