Michigan basketball, ranked #3 in the country, steamrolled a weak Binghamton team by a final score of 67-39. The game was never in doubt as the Bearcats scored just 14 points in the first half and Michigan exerted their will in a game where they didn’t play their most effective basketball. Trey Burke 3 Stars of the Game Trey Burke – Burke had another great night, going 8-12 from the floor for 19 points. He added 4 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal, and was 3-6 from long range. Burke had just 1 turnover on the night and runs his season numbers to 64 assists against only 23 turnovers. Nik Stauskas – Stauskas started off 2-6 from three but nailed his next 2 for a solid 4-8 night from distance. The freshman finished the night with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block. Nik may not have another game all year where he has that many wide open shots. Mitch McGary – The Monster was busy cleaning the glass all night, as usual. McGary’s final line included 6 points and 10 boards, setting a new career-high in that category. 3 Key Stats 11 fouls. That is the total number of fouls called on both sides of the ball tonight. When you have the #3 team in the nation playing Binghamton, apparently the refs are willing to nudge things along a bit. Only 8 free throws were attempted the entire game. Michigan shot just 10-30 from 3-point range. Most of that indiscretion came from another rough night by Tim Hardaway, Jr. who shot just 2-9 from beyond the arc. TH2 is now 8 for his last 37 from deep, good for a 22% mark. Right now Michigan can get by with Hardaway trying to figure out his shooting stroke but once Big Ten play hits they’ll need him firing with efficiency. Watch this closely. 10-0. Michigan has started off their season a perfect 10-0. Only 3 non-conference games remain before Big Ten play ensues. Barring a setback on Saturday night against West Virginia, the Wolverines should finish up the non-conference portion of their schedule undefeated. How the game was won Once the ref threw the ball up for the opening tip, it was already in the books. Binghamton literally had no chance. Despite that, the Bearcats temporarily took a 10-8 lead in the early going. That is the first time Michigan had trailed in a game since the NC State game back on November 27th. That amounts to four full games of action without trailing. This game was clearly scheduled as a cupcake between a tough Arkansas matchup and the West Virginia game. It served its purpose as the Wolverines romped. News and Notes Michigan won the turnover battle 7-16. The Wolverines outrebounded Binghamton 39-28. John Beilein’s team shot just 44.3% from the floor against a generous defense offered by the Bearcats. 18 of Michigan’s 27 field goals came via an assist. Aside from 5 assists by Burke, freshman Caris LeVert added a career-high 4 assists with no turnovers in 14 minutes of action. After being down 10-8, Michigan closed the 1st half on a 26-4 run. Next Michigan will take on West Virginia at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. John Beilein will get to coach against his old school now being piloted by Bob Huggins. WVU is off to a 4-3 start and should be a game the Wolverines come away victorious in yet again. The Mountaineers lost by 34 to Gonzaga early in the season. Their best win was a 1-point victory over Virginia Tech.
