Michigan fans can exhale. After spending a couple weeks with their obsessing about whether their prized freshman point guard, Trey Burke, would declare for the NBA Draft, they have their answer.  Burke announced today that he will be returning for his sophomore season.

Burke released the following statement Monday:

“Over the past few weeks, I have spent a lot of time thinking and praying about my future — not just about next year but many years down the road.  After gathering information, I am excited to be continuing my education at Michigan as we look to accomplish even more in our 2012-13 season.

I have so much more to develop as both a student and athlete, and there is no better place to do that than here at Michigan. I love my Michigan family and am really excited about playing with my teammates and our incoming freshmen. I want to thank my parents, my teammates and my coaches for the patience and guidance they gave me since this process began a few weeks ago.”

He technically could still change his mind as his official decision is not needed until the early entrant deadline on April 29, but his decision seems stable.  There were reports that Burke was leaning toward declaring, but that his parents wanted him to stay in Ann Arbor.  There was also a rumor that Burke had told his professors that he was leaving.  Hopefully for the maize and blue, he didn’t skip too many classes.

Once the Maize Rage geeks put their pants back on from the excitement of the big announcement, they better start preparing for Burke’s farewell tour.  Should he duplicate his freshman year, I think his parents might jump to the other side of the fence.
