The Michigan Wolverines made the Tennessee Volunteers look silly today in a 75-45 thrashing in an NCAA second-round matchup at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Michigan controlled every facet of the game throughout on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, holding Tennessee’s highly regarded guard Scott Hopson to only four points and keeping its star player Tobias Harris from taking over.
Michigan was led by Zack Novak’s 14 points, but most impressively, had five players finish in double figures, with 21 of the team’s 75 points coming from non-starters.
A game like this was just ho-hum right?
Nothing to really write home about.
Guess again.
Every game has something unique about it if you look closely enough.
Even in a blowout.
In today’s game, the Michigan Wolverines became the first team in NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament history to win without making a single free throw.
Michigan was 0-1 for the game from the line.
Yes, you read that correctly, 0-1.
Normally getting to the line only once in a 40-minute contest would signal your team was not aggressive enough on offense and likely had the pace of the game dictated by the opponent.
Obviously this was not the case in Michigan’s 30 point victory over Tennessee.
Basketball is a funny game sometimes.
Appearances can be deceiving and looking at the boxscore in a game that otherwise appeared to have been mundane and lopsided can reveal a historical fact that would have gone unnoticed.
March Madness is great for many reasons and the fact that history is made each day makes it even better.
