On Wednesday, Michigan State head basketball coach Tom Izzo announced that Gavin Schilling, the 6-foot-9 forward from Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., signed his National Letter of Intent to attend Michigan State University next fall and play for the Spartans during the 2013-2014 basketball season. Schilling averaged 13.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.1 blocks, while shooting .625 from the field during his senior season. He also helped lead his Findlay Prep team to a 35-1 record, including a perfect 34-0 regular season. Gavin Schilling (AP PHOTO) “I’m excited about Gavin Schilling’s addition to our program,” Izzo said in a statement . “He comes from a tremendous program and a great family. He defends, rebounds and runs the court very well. He’s a great worker that wants to learn and improve. Not only will he be a young freshman who doesn’t turn 18 until next November, he’s also young to the game, having picked up the game later in life than most college players. With that in mind, I look forward to watching him grow and develop.” The three-star recruit (per ESPN) was born in Germany and raised in France, and before spending his junior season at Chicago’s De La Salle Institute, he spent the 2010-11 season at Urspring, an elite German basketball academy where led his team to the U16 German High School Championship. In addition to that, Schilling played for Germany in the 2012 FIBA U18 European Championship where he averaged 8.8 points and 5.2 rebounds. Schilling chose MSU over UCLA, Minnesota, and Villanova.
