EAST LANSING — Remember just one month ago when the Golden Gophers were arguably the best team in the nation? Well, the Michigan State Spartans do. The then-No. 9 Minnesota Golden Gophers (17-5, 5-4) opened the Big Ten season with a 76-63 victory over the then-No. 18 Michigan State Spartans (18-4, 7-2) on the last day of 2012. Fast forward a little more than a month later, and the Gophers and Spartans are two completely different teams. Since the Big Ten opening day loss, the No. 12 Spartans have won seven of their last eight — with their only lose coming on the road at Indiana. Michigan State struggled to get any frontcourt offensive efficiency from Adreian Payne and Derrick Nix in that loss (combined 7-of-21 for 14 points), now, they’ve figured out how to make the big man combination work in their favor. Derrick Nix and Adreian Payne will need to dominate the glass against Minnesota on Wednesday night. (AP Photo) The Spartans scored only two points in the final seven minutes, now,...

Michigan State Basketball: Gary Harris puts Michigan State on his “back” in victory over Minnesota

Keith Appling injured his right shoulder in Wednesday’s victory over Minnesota. (AP Photo) EAST LANSING — Freshman Gary Harris scored 15 points and added four assists to help lead the No. 12 Michigan State Spartans to a 61-50 victory over No. 18 Minnesota. Harris, who has been dealing with back issues since last Thursday’s victory over Illinois, was a game-time decision, and...

Finally, the Gophers have a chance to play a bit of consequence-free basketball.

And now, for one night only, the Golden Gophers can play some consequence-free basketball against the Michigan State Spartans. Two wins last week gave the Gophers  a bit of breathing room. Losing five out of six games would have put the Gophers squarely on the bubble, or even the wrong side of the bubble, and Wednesday evening's game in East Lansing  would have been a true...

Banged-up backcourt leads No. 12 MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Subtract the backcourt tandem of Keith Appling and Gary Harris, and Michigan States basketball team would have difficulty beating anybody in the Big Ten outside of Nebraska and Penn State. With them, the Spartans are ranked 12th in the country and are just a half-game out of first place at 19-4 overall and 8-2 in the conference. In Wednesday nights 61-50...

Spartans may rely on Valentine

Michigan State needs freshman Denzel Valentine to turn his potential into production. Soon. ''I'm expecting big things out of him,'' Spartans coach Tom Izzo said. The versatile guard likely will play an expanded role when the 12th-ranked Spartans (18-4, 7-2 Big Ten) host No. 18 Minnesota (18-4, 5-4) on Wednesday night. ''He's not a freshman anymore...

Injury Bug Hits the Spartans, Again:

Michigan State came back last game, after being down 10 at home against Illinois. The Spartans were hit with the injury bug again as Gary Harris and Travis Trice both left the game without returning. Keith Appling stepped up in a big way, finishing with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and a block. The newly named captain, or #CaptainKeith as I have been calling him on twitter...

Michigan State vs. Minnesota Preview

2/6/2013 at 7PM on Big Ten Network Ah. Sweet revenge. That’s the payoff awaiting the Spartans if they can log this one into the win column. I thought Minnesota was overrated at the beginning of conference play, and maybe the Spartans did as well when they played them in the first game and came up empty. Of course, at the time MSU was even more turnover prone and less consistent...
