Via Larry Brown Sports:

Kansas came away with an exciting 108-96 overtime win over Iowa State on Monday night, but the victory did not come without questions. The Big 12 reviewed the officiating from the game and admitted mistakes were made.

Here's the statement issued by the conference on Tuesday:

"The Big 12 Conference acknowledges that officiating errors were made at the end of regulation during last night's Kansas at Iowa State men's basketball game," the statement says. "The plays have been reviewed and appropriate measures will be taken by the Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officials to adjust the number of future assignments for the two officials involved in conjunction with Conference policies."

The play that is believed to be in question came with five seconds remaining in regulation when Kansas was trailing 90-88. Jayhawks guard Elijah Johnson drove to the lane and barreled through Iowa State forward Georges Niang. No charging foul was called. Instead, Niang was called for a hold when Johnson missed the shot and the ball was loose on the floor.

Naturally, Johnson went on to hit both free throws and send the game to overtime, where Kansas won it.

3 Comments:
  • I would love to hear comment from the Kansas coach about the officials.
  • How about Big 12 admits officiating errors throughout entire game, more against KU. Focusing on one call that actually was a good no-call as still photography clearly shows ISU player's knees bent/falling back before contact, so either a blocking foul or no call. Earlier, two ISU players clearly traveled, but no calls made, one grabbed ball while on his knees to then stand up and pass all w/o dribbling, and another rolls from his stomach to his back to then pass? KU's big called for charge when should was obvious blocking foul on ISU big moving under him while in the air; early moving screen called on KU big when replay shows no contact; ISU guard shoves KU player with forearm, but KU player called for the foul; KU big cleanly blocks ISU shot w/o any contact to ISU player, but is called for foul? KU Coach T'd w/o warning as given to Huggybear in West Virginia game last night. Also a quick 5 sec call on inbounds play agst KU and two very questionable traveling calls made agst KU, so multiple bad calls affecting the game in ISU's favor, and so wrong to fuel up fan base who are now threatening KU players and coach? During game, ISU player puts arm around ref to draw attn to basket interference replay on their jumbo-tron? And they still missed the call as was ISU player's arm in that net but refs waved off KU basket. Since when do arena's put those plays on their jumbo tron screens? Have never seen that done, only hightlight plays of the home team should be shown. What kind of frenzy were they trying to create with fans who don't have any basketball knowledge complaining of calls the entire game and now making death threats - shirts with "Breathe if you hate Kansas" - what kind of sportsmanship and class is that for a college? I have no problem with that dunk at the end of the game either - if up by 20 maybe? Crowd throwing things at KU players and yelling obcenities and no security to protect players? Big 12 should be looking at the things that really do need addressing? Atmosphere should be competitive but safe for the athletes, coaches, and fans.

Iowa State Students Call KU Elijah Johnson a N*gger, Threatens His Life Via Twitter (Photo)

The slam at the end of Kansas’ overtime win over Iowa State by Elijah Johnson, probably wasn’t necessary and showed a bit of poor sportsmanship. Especially, considering there were some questionable calls that got the game into overtime in the first place. If ISU students wanted to troll Johnson about that, I wouldn’t have had any problems with that. What people are going to...

Hey Iowa St. it’s okay to blame the officials

I’m tired of hearing the same old thing. “You can’t blame the officials for a loss.” Or here is my favorite, “it was a very good game on both sides and as with any game there were questionable calls for and against both sides; however, you can’t leave it up to or blame the officials. [...]

Johnson leads No. 6 KU to OT win at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Kansas coach Bill Self has 500 wins because Elijah Johnson "blacked out." That's the only way Johnson could describe one of the great performances by a Kansas player under Self. Johnson scored a career-high 39 points -- including eight in the final 29 seconds of regulation and 12 in overtime -- and No. 6 Kansas rallied to beat Iowa State 108-96...

Refs block Iowa State's upset of Kansas

Kansas fans will tell you that the calls went the other way for the first 38 minutes, but what fan doesn't think their team got screwed in a college basketball game? Yes, there were some bad calls early, but it didn't seem unfair to me and I have no horse in this race. But late in the game there were three questionable calls (four if you count the phantom call on Kevin...
