Fans who attend USC Trojans men's and women's basketball games this season may notice two new characters roaming around the venue.

This is because the school unveiled two new mascots, Tommy and Traveler, on Wednesday, both of which have been created in an effort to attract more fans and students to home basketball games. However, some students don't seem to be taking the news very well.

"We are a traditional university that does not need to reinvent ourselves or create new excitement," said Robert Shawhan a senior at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. "Our fan base probably does not appreciate a push like this. Like our uniforms we stay true to tradition."

Preach, Robert. Preach.

Lauren Estrada, a senior at the Marshall School of Business, echoed Robert's sentiments.

"I think it's too much of a departure from our classic Tommy Trojan and Traveler [mascot] that we have at football games," she said.

USC plans to phase the mascots in by having them appear at tailgates and other functions before letting them appear at games. Judging by their lackluster reception from students, Tommy and Traveler may not be around too long, though.

  • They are not very inspiring. Maybe they will grow on us.
  • As a USC alum, I just hate both of them! Get serious.
  • I think they will fit into the California atmosphere & community quite well
  • the new traveler doesn't leave piles of poop on the basketball floor.
  • Most people don't get that the Traveler is the University's mascot.
I'm banking on the 'mere-exposure effect', articulated by Zajonc
the thing is uglier than me!

  • Uh, copy Sparty much? Michigan State Spartans mascot.
