Louisville coach Rick Pitino was in fine spirits after his Cardinals dismantled the University of Missouri-Kansas City 99-47 on Saturday.

He was in such a good mood, in fact, that he didn’t get irritated when a reporter’s phone went off during his postgame news conference. Instead, he stopped talking about the virtues of humility and took the call himself.

Pitino had a nice chat with the woman on the other end, listening to her request to meet for a drink at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse. Pitino politely declined the offer, saying he had to go recruiting, then handed the phone to its owner.

Winning does strange things, even to the often-prickly Pitino.

Video: UMKC Is Really Bad At Basketball

Rick Pitino did something very rare last night on his weekly radio show. In so many words Pitino actually admitted how bad Louisville’s opponent is. Earlier this season I said Samford may be the worst opponent on the Cards schedule this year, but I may have been wrong. UMKC may actually be the worst. Here is a video that was published over the summer of a Kansas City NBC affiliated...

Smith leads Cardinals over UMKC

Russ Smith scored a career-high 31 points and No. 5 Louisville cruised past Missouri-Kansas City 99-47 on Saturday. Smith was 12 of 18 from the field and 3 of 5 from 3-point range in surpassing his previous high of 30 last year against Kentucky. He led Louisville (8-1) in scoring for the sixth time in nine games. Luke Hancock added 15 points and six rebounds and Montrezl Harrell...

Is Russ Smith The Next Kemba Walker?

Comparing any current college player to former Connecticut guard Kemba Walker may seem a little ridiculous, right? Considering how special Walker was to his team and all of the accomplishments he achieved in his final season, you’d think a player like him would only come around once in a decade. Surprisingly, it may not be as ridiculous as some would expect. Or shall I say Russdiculous...

Russ Smith unleashed in

Fourteen minutes remaining in the second half, here comes Russ Smith again. Sizing up the defender, cutting right, down the middle among the trees, throwing up the ball, a sure two points. But wait, he’s passing the basketball to Luke Hancock in the corner. Three points instead of two. Russdiculous here, there, everywhere. On his way to 31 points, five assists, seven rebounds and...

UMKC-Louisville Preview

Louisville's often-stifling defense has had trouble living up to Rick Pitino's lofty standards at times this season. If it continues to look anything like it did in the Cardinals' latest game, the legendary coach shouldn't have many complaints. Fifth-ranked Louisville shouldn't have much trouble using its frenetic pressure to great effect Saturday when it hosts...
