Last year Oakland’s UMKC transfer Reggie Hamilton lived in the large shadow casted by star Center Keith Benson. Hamilton as a Junior quietly averaged 17 ppg, 2nd behind Benson by .3. But now with Benson gone, Hamilton doesn’t only lead the Golden Grizzlies in scoring, he now leads the entire nation.

The 5-11 Point Guard is averaging 25.5 ppg, 5.1 apg,  nearly 4 rpg, and 2 spg helping the GG’s to a 17-14 record and 3rd in the Summit League. Hamilton has had the most 30+ games in the league with 14 (2 40+ games). And in his last 6 games Hamilton has been unconscious having scored 30+ each game (40, 31, 30, 34, 31, 31). And in these crucial 6 games Oakland has been 5-1 thanks to R-HAM. Everytime this season  Hamilton has scored 30+, the Grizz are 10-4, talk about puttin’ the team on yo’ back.

Hamilton has been killing it all year, and now that Damian Lillard (the 2nd leading scorer in the Nation) has finally been discovered, it’ll only be a matter of time until the best scorer in the NCAA is.  Hamilton is 2nd in the NCAA with 17.3 FGA/G, and is 5th in FG/G with 7.7, giving him a solid 44 FG% (40.7 3PT%). I know some might think Hamilton is only putting up these stats because he’s in the Summit League,  but this year he’s scored 35 points against Tennessee,  28  against Michigan,  and 31 against Arizona. There is no reason why Hamilton shouldn’t get a look in the 2nd round of next year’s NBA Draft, he could potentially be a sparkplug off the bench with his instant offense, think Earl Boykins but taller, same game as a Mo Williams or Bobby Jackson (sidenote: Boykins averaged 25.7 ppg, 5.5 apg, 3.2 rpg, and 1.2 spg his Senior year at Eastern Michigan, but he went undrafted which doesn’t at all help my argument).

Right now Hamilton isn’t found on any of the most respected or popular Mock Drafts, nor is he even recognized by ESPN’s Chad Ford. But if he gets more exposure as this 30+ PT streak continues his draft stock could rise as a late 2nd rounder. There’s no question Hamilton has stepped up his game and improved every season,  I hope this guy gets another chance to get to the big dance so he can display his incredible scoring ability without the distractions of Keith Benson.

Last time I rooted this hard for somebody to get drafted was Lester Hudson…he didn’t really pan out, but drafted nonetheless.
