After years of rampant speculation, Brad Stevens has made the jump. And it’s not the one you thought. The highly successful Butler University basketball coach has accepted the head coaching position with the Boston Celtics, the school and team announced. Stevens, who won a Division I-record 166 games in his first six years at Butler, never won fewer than 22 in a season and led the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championship game appearances in 2010 and 2011. Though he has done nothing to stir the speculation, Stevens has been linked to numerous big-time college jobs over the previous few years, including Illinois and UCLA. [Continue Reading] I have all the respect in the world for Brad Stevens as a basketball coach. I think he could have been one of the better college hoops coaches of all-time. The NBA is a different animal and I’m not sure he’s going to workout there. I also think he’ll hate it. Let me just say this – did Stevens play the best chess game of all-time by turning down Illinois and UCLA and running the risk of not being successful and forfeiting an NBA opportunity. Could be brilliant… Part of the reason the O/U is 2.5 is because he’s coaching probably the worst team in the Eastern Conference now.
