Yesterday, it was announced that Kentucky had inked John Calipari to a deal that extended his current contract through 2021.  The deal also made Coach Cal the highest paid coach of a public institution in the country, second only to Duke’s Coach K. Perhaps one of the biggest changes to the contract though, other than the bump in pay, is that there are no longer incentives based on his teams performances.  There are no more bonuses for championships, or however far the team advances in the NCAA tournament. This has especially drawn the ire of journalists across the country, folks who especially love sending tweets like this one: “Aaron Harrison’s shot was worth nearly $330,000 in Final Four bonuses to #Kentucky men’s basketball coaches and the athletics director — Steve Berkowitz (@ByBerkowitz) March 30, 2014“ A journalist who chose to remain nameless had the following to say in regards to the situation: “There are fewer things that I look forward to more every year than pointing out the hypocrisy of the NCAA through the amounts of money that coaches make by advancing in the tournament.  Cal was one of the best, because his bonuses were so large and it made me so happy being able to say things like that.  I always got a chuckle out of him touting ‘players first’ while cashing checks that large.  Now, I’m not even sure I’m going to watch the NCAA tournament next season.  Just wont’ be quite as fun.” It was unclear what the motive was for the change in the incentives portion of the salary, but Cal cleared it up in a statement that came out in the press release: “In the words of the immortal D Generation X, I’ve got two words for you ‘sport’s writers out there that like mentioning MY bonuses for MY teams success…….SUCK IT!”
