Omar Cook is from Queens, NY and attended St. John’s for just one year. Omar Cook was big-time recruit; he was a McDonald’s All-American and even performed in the event’s slam dunk contest…which DeShawn Stevenson won. In Omar’s freshman year, he played 38.2 mpg and averaged 15.3 ppg, shooting just above 30% from 3.  He also averaged 8.7 apg, and just over 2 steals a game. He broke St. John’s alumni Mark Jackson’s single game assists record with his 17 assists against Stony Brook.  If Omar would have stayed just one or two more years he could have:

  • Averaged a double-double
  • Dominated the Big East
  • Make a run in the NCAA tournament
  • Become a first round draft pick

Instead Omar entered the 2001 NBA Draft. Omar Cook fell to the Orlando Magic in the 2nd round, specifically 3rd overall in the 2nd round, one slot behind Gilbert Arenas. Cook was then traded to the Denver Nuggets for a future first round draft pick. This is where it gets messy, he was later waived by the Nuggets and picked up by the Dallas Mavericks, then released by the Mavs, to then be picked up by the Orlando Magic, then he was cut by them, to end up on the Portland Trailblazers where he would finally get on the court. The guard played in 17 games, and he was 7-27 from the field and averaged .8 ppg in the 8.2 minutes minutes per game he played. The next season he was signed and then released by the Charlotte Bobcats, and landed on the Toronto Raptors. Omar only played in 5 games, but averaged 14.2 mpg and averaged 4.6 ppg and 4.4 apg. That was Omar’s last season in the NBA.

Cook went to play in the D-League for a little bit, but ended up going overseas. He played in the Belgian League, the French League, the Russian League,  the Adriatic League, the Spanish League, and the Italian League. In 2008 Cook applied for Montenegrin citizenship, so he could play for the Montenegro’s national basketball team. He currently signed a two-year contract and is on the Olimpia Milano Italian team.
