Rutgers University Athletic director Tim Pernetti resigned for basically acting to slow on the firing of Mike Rice. Once the video crossed his desk there was no way that Rice should have been allowed to blow another whistle at practice for the University ever again. Maybe Pernetti was hoping this would go away on its own but once the media got a hold of the footage and it became public…more heads were going to roll and they did. Heads have rolled at Rutgers University, after the video of former men’s basketball head coach Mike Rice surfaced earlier this week. Assistant coach Jimmy Martelli and athletic director Tim Pernetti have resigned. Michelle Beadle and Dave Briggs believe Pernetti should have fought to get Rice fired immediately after he witnessed the footage, the body count stops at the feet of University President Robert Barchi. There is more to this as well. The whistleblower in this was former assisant coach Eri Murdock who was fired By Mike Rice. Eric Murdock filed the lawsuit Friday in state court, accusing the university of violating the state’s employee protection act and his contract and of retaliating against him for complaining about the mistreatment of players. ”Efforts to get Rutgers to address their problems were ignored for months,” Murdock said at a news conference in a banquet facility. ”Instead I was removed from my position. That is wrong and why I filed a lawsuit.” Murdock said his lawyer wrote to the university about coach Mike Rice’s ”unlawful conduct” in July and gave the university video in November showing Rice pushing players, throwing basketballs at them and berating them with invectives, including gay slurs. ”Despite having been in possession of such video footage, the university and its representatives inexplicably chose to ignore Defendant Rice’s unlawful conduct,” the lawsuit said. Let’s be clear about one thing, this isn’t the first time a coach has been fired for being abusive to his players, Woody Hayes and Bob Knight are two that come to mind. It won’t be the last time a coach will be fired for this but even more tragic these happen with the full knowledge many times with the college hierchy’s knowing what goes on and choosing to ignore what happens mostly because if you win it covers many sins.
