InGameNow:
Usually, "Statement Games" are ones where the winning team is announcing to the rest of the league that they're legit. They're announcing their presence, demanding respect. This past Sunday, a "statement game" took place in San Francisco. Only it wasn't your typical "statement game" - the 49ers lost...badly.
After incurring an unnecessary roughness penalty, tight end Vernon Davis thought nothing of his actions and walked to the sidelines, but interim head coach and all-around badass Mike Singletary wasn't having any of that. After the game, Singletary explained his two rules for playing football: Rule #1, hit the other team in the mouth, and Rule #2 Don't give anything away. Penalties give away yards, and Davis was in clear violation. The punishment? Banishment to the showers for the former 6th overall pick with 10 minutes still remaining in the 4th quarter.
You could say Singletary made an example of Davis - and he did. It was a necessary example, though, as this 49er team has been pathetic and without direction for years. If it takes yelling at a player and sending him to the locker room over a petty flag, then that's what it takes. Singletary ain't takin' none of the player's crap, and now they definitely know it.
