The Leadoff: CJ Wilcox impressive last night, but will he surpass Ryan Appleby?
Romar was quoted last night as saying that Wilcox's second half 24 point performance "one of the greatest performances in the history of the program," when considering the stakes. Wilcox was 4-7 from three for the night, helping the Huskies to an 80-73 victory over the UCLA Bruins. I thought I'd take the time to poll the readers of our Facebook fan page on who they thought was the best three point shooter at UW during Romar's time as head coach.
The choices were CJ Wilcox, Scott Suggs, Ryan Appleby, and Tre Simmons. Appleby is No. 1 on all-time in 3-point field goals made and is also No. 4 in 3-point percentage at 41.3%. Simmons is right behind him at 41.2%, but had 200 less attempts than Appleby. It might be worth mentioning Mike Jensen had a 37.8% 3-point percentage, good for 9th on the all-time list.
Suprisingly, Justin Dentmon made more threes in his carrer than Tre Simmons did. For 3-pointers made in a season, Appleby holds the all-time record, going 84/194 in 2007. Right behind him at No. 2 is Tre Simmons, going 80/192 in 2005.
For three-pointers made in a game, Appley hit 9 in a game against Oregon St. in 2008. Justin Dentmon put up 7 threes in two games in 2009. While Simmons hit 6 threes in 3 games in 2005. Appleby also hit 7 in one game and hit 6 threes five different times as well.
From this evidence, it's clear that Appleby is the best three-point shooter. Can CJ Wilcox catch him? Wilcox is currently shooting at a clip of 41% and has put up 122 shots from three in his first season. I don't think he'll be near Appleby's average shot total of 186. In fact, the player that's taken the most threes this season has been Isaiah Thomas, who is shooting them at 34.9%.
Scott Suggs is actually leading the team with a 44.9%, but he hasn't even taken over 100 three point shots yet, having only attempted 89 so far. I don't think Wilcox will catch Appleby, but I do envision in the future that he'll have a lot more nights where he'll hit more than five threes in a game. This would be my ranking of three-point shooters in the Romar era:
- Ryan Appleby
- Tre Simmons
- CJ Wilcox
- Justin Dentmon
- Scott Suggs
- Mike Jensen
