The Leadoff: Venoy Overton's Mistake
Within an hour after the rape allegation was made public by KIRO 7 news, almost everyone knew who the "unnamed prominent athlete" was. By the time Washington went on its road trip to Pullman, cougar fans had already fashioned signs and were ready to yell chants attacking Overton.
Even though the rape allegation didn't result in his arrest, we all know Overton was probably doing something that night his mother wouldn't be proud of.
And now he's been officially charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor. Romar's program has been squeaky clean in his 10 years here, and because of the events of one night, it no longer is. Overton's actions have done damage to the reputation of the program, the reputation of the school, and most importantly his own reputaion.
On a less important note, the Huskies are without a backup point guard for the rest of the Pac-10 tournament. This can't be a good thing.
If you haven't yet, I suggest reading Jerry Brewer's column on the story. There is no reason Overton should be on this team anymore. He's been here for four years and has failed to live up to Romar's biggest overall goal for his players: becoming a responsible member of society.
This is more than just a late-season distraction, it is a disgusting and downright disappointing story of a selfish player.
