I heard on the radio that out of the nine head coaches (as three have not yet taken part in the tournament before this season) only a trio had a winning record in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. While that something I could easily believe, what I had a lot harder time wrapping around was that Sidney Lowe, N.C. State’s head coach that will probably be gone as soon as this tournament is over, was one of the three. The others being Mike Krzyzewski and our own Roy Williams, which basically says that no team outside of North Carolina has a coach with a winning record in the post season tournament. Below is the list of all the coaches and what record they have…
Mike Krzyzewski, Duke, 49-17 (74.2%)
Roy Williams, UNC, 9-5 (64.2%)
Sidney Lowe, NC State, 5-4 (55.5%)
Tony Bennett, Virginia, 1-1 (500%)
Paul Hewitt, Ga Tech, 9-10 (47.3%)
Gary Williams, Maryland, 17-19 (47.2%)
Frank Haith, Miami, 5-6 (45.4%)
Leonard Hamilton, FSU, 5-8 (38.4%)
Seth Greenberg, Va Tech, 3-6 (33.3%)
Steve Donahue, BC, 0-0
Brad Brownell, Clemson, 0-0
Jeff Bzdelik, Wake Forest, 0-0
Another amazing fact is that Krzyzewski has coached in 66 games while the rest of the coaches in the ACC have 113 games combined. Like the guy or not, you have to say that is pretty impressive, and unless there is another alumni that goes back home and becomes a legend I just do not see anyone getting close to that number. Think about it, if you are a good team you miss the first round, meaning that you can get 3 games at the most, which it would take you 22 seasons to equal the number of the Duke coach. In this day and age I don’t see many head coaches staying at a school that long anymore!
