Louisville coach Rick Pitino is baffled by Russ Smith. Not by the star guard himself, who is managing to outdo himself each time he steps on the court. No, Pitino doesn't understand why the rest of the country isn't as impressed with Smith as he - and every opponent who's faced him - is. ''I look at (player of the year) lists, and I don't see Russ Smith. I don't see him on the All-America teams,'' Pitino said. ''I'm baffled, just baffled, because it wasn't like he was a Johnny-come-lately. He carried us on his back to a Final Four last year.'' And he's one game from doing it again. With Louisville having a rare off night, Smith lifted the Cardinals to a 77-69 victory over Oregon on Friday that put them in the Midwest Region finals. He matched his career high of 31 points, including seven during what would wind up being the game's decisive run. Smith is averaging 27 points through the first three games of the to...

Cards down Ducks 77-69; Move to Elite 8

With the team battling illness and going against a scorching hot team, Russ Smith and company found a way to pull out a victory, 77-69.  Oregon was pesky and kept hanging around but in the end, Louisville was just to much.  This win combined with a heart wrenching Kansas loss gives Louisville the title of the only 1 seed remaining in this tournament. Rick Pitino calls Coach K the modern-day John Wooden

Rick Pitino and Mike Krzyzewski may be in competition with each other, but they are also friends who have immense respect for one another. The friendship between Pitino and Coach K began after their teams competed in the 1992 East Region finals of the NCAA tournament. Krzyzewski’s Duke squad beat Pitino’s Kentucky team 104-103 on Christian Laettner’s famous shot. The game is...

Poor start ends Oregon run in NCAA tournament

Blame Oregon's poor start for its disappointing finish. The Ducks missed eight of their first 11 shots and got outscored by Russ Smith through the first 10 minutes Friday night. They came back to make a game of it late, but the Ducks never could overcome that early hole in a 77-69 loss to top-seeded Louisville. ''If it wasn't for the beginning, it would have been...

Syracuse and Wichita will be joined by…

The Big Ten was and is the best conference in college basketball, but they are the cusp of not having one representative in the Final Four. Such is life in the NCAA Tournament. Single-elimination lowers the odds, and now they pin their hopes on Michigan to defeat the Florida Gators. Can Trey Burke beat the pressure defense of Florida? Surely. We already saw Michigan destroy the vaunted...

Louisville has advanced to their fourth regional final in the last six years. Rick Pitino’s Cardinals defeated No. 12 seed Oregon 77-69 in the round of sixteen. This was easily Louisville’s sloppiest game of the tournament, but it’s hard to not give Oregon credit for that.
