Potential No. 1 NBA Draft pick Joel Embiid has a stress fracture in his right foot that will require surgery, his agent confirmed in a written statement Thursday.
"Joel Embiid suffered a stress fracture to the navicular bone in his right foot," Arn Tellem, Embiid's agent, wrote. "He is scheduled to have surgery (Friday). Joel will be unable to participate in additional workouts, and will not attend the draft in New York."
Embiid's injury was reportedly discovered by Cleveland doctors following an individual workout with the Cavaliers last week. The Cavs own the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
According to sources, the Cavs put the 7-footer from Kansas through a rigorous workout and his medicals initially checked out. The Cavs were more concerned with examining Embiid's back at the time -- as a stress fracture caused him to miss the final weeks of his lone college basketball season. The foot issue wasn't discovered until later, sources said.
