I've not paid a huge amount of attention to Johnnies hoops in these parts in quite some time. Truth be told, I'd love them to become more relevant and think Lavin is the right man for the job. Right now, though, the Red Storm is a middling 5-5 on the season and have suffered through some eligibility issues and transfers that have put a damper on some incredible recruiting classes. That said, I've noticed one thing that has become abundantly clear about this team as I watched this recent promo on MSG. While St. John's might not be a national powerhouse quite yet, their roster ranks among the tops in the country in name awesomeness.
Did you catch all of those? That is some name gold. We all knew about God'sGift. With Achiuwa on the roster, you could make the argument that boasting the player with the best name in college basketball almost automatically vaults St. John's into top 10 consideration. But it doesn't stop there. The name wealth with the Red Storm is a cup that runneth over.
Let's for a second pretend Nurideen Lindsey, a sophomore guard who announced plans to transfer earlier this month, was still active. The year's starting squad included God'sGift, Nurideen (Nuri), Antee Aryee, Sir'Dominic Pointer, Trai Donaldson and Boris Brakalov (no, there's nothing unusual about Boris but his Russian presence adds a spicy, little kick to the name chops of this Red Storm contingent). That is a powerful five. No offense to Malik Stith, D'Angelo Harrison, Jamal White, Moe Harkless, Phil Greene, Sam Sealy and Gerard Rivers. You gentlemen have nothing to be ashamed of.
Seriously, how can you compete with a one-two punch of God'sGift and Sir'Dominic? How has this escaped me until now? The scariest part? Eligibility issues took two incoming players off the roster in Norvelle Pelle and Jakarr Simpson. Yes, let that sink in for a minute. This roster could have included a God'sGift, Nurideen, Antee, Sir'Dominic, Jakarr, Norvelle, Moe, Boris and Trai. Simply incredible. One might say potentially historic. Such a shame.
Still, with the current Johnnies roster who else can contend? We issue that more as a request than a challenge. Share your wisdom with us, silly little blogosphere.
