Tyrone Garland (Photo Credit:Charlie Riedel/AP) For the first time, senior Tyrone Garland will be able to participate in a  complete season for the La Salle Explorers. After transferring from Virginia Tech, Garland had to sit out the spring of 2011 and fall of 2012 due to compliance rules, but the transfer played in every game starting December 15th for the 2012-2013 season. He will continue to be one La Salle’s lead scorers this upcoming year. This past season Garland averaged 13.1 points per game.  He kept the offense fast and made perfect passes to Ramon Galloway for numerous alley-oops. Although Garland put up a good three point shot when it mattered he is still has one of the lowest three point field goal percentages on the team. This is something he will have to improve upon coming into the 2013-2014 season. The Philadelphia native was a standout during La Salle’s NCAA tournament run.  He became most noted for the famous “Southwest Philly Floater.” With 2.5 seconds on the clock Garland’s floater led to an upset of Ole Miss 76-74, sending the Explorer’s into the Sweet 16.  During that game Garland scored a total of 17 points. When interviewed after that shot Garland attributed the smart play to his confidence.  After the success of this past season his confidence should be even higher. The biggest obstacle the Explorer’s face this season is how to replace the spunk and scoring of Ramon Galloway.  With his experience at Virginia Tech Garland knows how to be a top scorer. As a freshman at Virginia Tech he appeared in 30 games recording a total of 80 points, 13 assists, 10 three-pointers, eight rebounds and five steals.  During Garland’s sophomore year he only played in eight games but he shot 50 percent from the field, was 75 percent from the foul line, and scored 13 points in his first career start that year. Garland is a player that has improved every season, achieving career high points both his freshman and sophomore year at Virginia Tech and making clutch plays under pressure this past season with La Salle.  The real challenge will be how he does under the even greater presure for the Explorers to continue to be a dominating force in the A-10.
