The official Syracuse University Twitter account sent out a rather peculiar tweet suggesting longtime men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim was retiring. It was accompanied by a link to a source alleging that the school has asked Boeheim to retire amid possible NCAA violations. The announcement came following the Orange's 78-57 victory over DePaul Wednesday night. And it immediately caused a stir among the social media world. From the source linked in the previous tweet:A source close to DYST Now is reporting that Syracuse director of Athletics, Dr. Daryl Gross is expected to meet with the NCAA about possible NCAA violations from last year's team. Syracuse head coach, Jim Boeheim as a result has also been asked to retire. The aforementioned tweet was quickly deleted and an explanation was provided Thursday morning.SU spokesman Kevin Quinn: (Tweet) was inadvertently and mistakenly sent out. Nothing contained in tweet or blog link is accurate or true.— Syracuse Basketball (@PSBasketball) March 7, 2013#OrangeNation: Earlier tonight a tweet was mistakenly sent. Nothing in the tweet was true or accurate and we apologize for the confusion.— Syracuse University (@SyracuseU) March 7, 2013Boeheim, 68, has been coaching the Orange since 1976 and has guided the program to 28 NCAA Tournament appearances and one National Championship (2003).His 911 career wins rank second among all active coaches.Via USA TODAY
