It was a good day for basketball fans in the State of Michigan, especially if you’re a fan of either Michigan or Michigan State. In the early game from the Palace, Michigan punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 with a 78-53 win over an up tempo VCU team that just came off an impressive win over Akron Thursday. Mitch McGary, who was just inserted into the starting lineup in the Round 2 opener, led the Wolverine charge with 21 points and 14 boards. It was also McGary’s high motor that energized Michigan to weather the early storm that was the VCU havoc defense. Leading 38-23 at the half, Michigan continued to lay into the Rams as Trey Burke found his scoring touch notching 18 points and 7 assists while Glenn Robinson III and Tim Hardaway Jr. added 14 points a piece. Michigan will now face the winner of the Kansas/North Carolina game which will be decided Sunday.
