Virginia and Virginia Tech played a grinding, 55 possession game, where neither team scored more than 0.85 points per possession. With :49 seconds left a Jontel Evans runner cut the Hokies lead to 44-43. Virginia called a timeout. Virginia Tech ran some clock but couldn't do anything, so the Hokies called a timeout with :26.4 seconds left (and :11 left on the shot clock). After the previous timeout Virginia had broke the huddle with 6'8 Akil Mitchell guarding the Hokies' Dorenzo Hudson. On three of the previous four possessions Hudson had posted up smaller UVA guards, and he converted on two of those possessions (one jump hook, one trip to the line).
