Flenard Whitfield's double-double led Western Michigan to an 80-58 victory over Hope College in the Broncos' home opener Wednesday night. Whitfield scored 22 points, giving him 1,010 for his career, and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Broncos (1-6). Matt Stainbrook hit double figures for the sixth time this season with 19 points, and Austin Richie scored 13 in the first start of his career. Billy Seiler led the Division III Flying Dutchmen (4-1) with 14 points. Nate Snuggerud added 11 and Nate VanArendonk 10. David Brown's 3-pointer gave Western Michigan a double-digit lead at 15-4 just 5:11 into the game. The Broncos led 41-25 at intermission, and Whitfield's dunk gave them their largest advantage at 64-40 with 9:15 left. Hope was playing a Division I opponent for the first time since the 1991-92 season and was facing Western Michigan for the first time since 1950-51.
