MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Buzz Williams never expected to be the head coach at a major college basketball program. He doesn't even feel that he deserves to be in this position as the leader of the Marquette Golden Eagles team. But the 39-year-old colorful, energetic and recently-slimmed-down coach achieved another milestone Tuesday night with his 100th career win.The incredible back-story of how Williams got his first job in coaching in 1992 was told in its entirety by Williams in front of a room of reporters at last season's NCAA Tournament. For more than nine consecutive minutes, Williams divulged every last detail, including how he literally stalked his first employer outside that coach's house. That tactic surprisingly worked, and soon Williams -- whose resume at the time pretty much only included that he had experience sweeping gym floors and was a hard worker -- was an assistant coach at the University of Texas at Arlington. So for Williams to get 100 wins before turning 40 years old was improbable, to say the least."God does immeasurably more than you pray for, or that you deserve," Williams said after Marquette beat South Florida, 67-47. "Really, what I ought to do is, I ought to be at a 2-A high school in Texas as a JV assistant coach. That's what I deserve."It's not about the 100 games, but I'm very thankful for all the people that have been a part of it, particularly the guys that are here."One aspect of Williams' personality that is noticeable nearly every time he speaks is that he is obsessed with numbers. So, when the public address announcer at the Bradley Center told the crowd of 13,693 at the conclusion of Tuesday's game that Williams had just won his 100th game, that was not his first time hearing it or knowing about it."Not to sound like a weirdo (but) I beat all of ya'll when it comes to numbers," Williams said when asked how he found out he was going for win No. 100. "As much as ya'll Twitter and Facebook and act like ya'll study stuff, ya'll sleep way more than I study numbers."Not all of those wins came at Marquette. Williams did spend one season as the head coach at the University of New Orleans, where he went 14-17 before accepting an assistant coaching position at Marquette in 2007. But a year later, Williams was the head coach following Tom Crean's departure to Indiana. Williams is now 86-41 as the Golden Eagles' head coach, including a trip to the Sweet 16 last season."He has a long way to go," said star guard Darius Johnson-Odom, who led Marquette with 17 points. "I think he's going to be here for a while."Follow Paul Imig on Twitter.
