Coming into Sunday’s home matchup with Illinois, Michigan’s two talented sophomores–Tim Hardaway Jr. and Evan Smotrycz–had struggled mightily. Neither had reached double figures in their two previous games, an alarming sign for a Wolverines squad that needs to score in bulk in order to win games. Sunday provided some reassurance for the Ann Arbor faithful, as Hardaway Jr. and Smotrycz combined for 28 points on a combined 8-15 shooting performance to lead the Wolverines to a, 70-61, victory over the Fighting llini. Since conference play began, Smotrycz has been an afterthought in Michigan’s offensive attack. The sophomore had only recorded two double-digit scoring performances, and one of those came against lowly Penn State in the Wolverines’ Big Ten opener.
