Score one for the arts. Brandon Sherrod, a rising senior on the Yale men’s basketball team, has chosen the microphone over the hardwood. The 6-foot-6 forward will forego his final season with the Bulldogs’ basketball squad to be a member of the Whiffenpoofs, the 14-member all-male a cappella group.

The Whiffenpoofs are, perhaps, Yale’s most famous and prestigious team. The group, formed in 1909, is comprised of rising seniors who take a year off from school to travel the globe to perform.
Sherrod said the decision was a “tough choice.” He grew up playing basketball and singing in the church choir. The Bulldogs went 19-14 last season and could be a postseason team in 2014-’15. Yale hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 1962.

Ball is no longer life for Yale basketball player Brandon Sherrod. The junior has decided to leave the basketball team to pursue his career of singing.
“This is supposed to be the year, and you want to play with your guys,” he said.
“But the Whiffenpoofs is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
