We entered the 2009 season with one major question- could
the North Carolina Tar Heels live up to the massive expectations being heaped
upon them in the preseason?
We end the 2009 season with one clear answer - hell yes they can, and boy did
they ever deliever on biggest stage in college basketball.
Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Danny Green all came back to
school for this one moment, this one chance to become legendary. And rising to
the occasion when it matter most, they played the national championship
game like they had been preparing for this very game for 12 months, as if the
previous 35 games were just a dress rehearsal.
Carolina just overwhelmed the
feel-good Spartans in every way imaginable. The Heels controlled the tempo with ease,
created turnovers at will, got balanced scoring from every player on the floor. After
seven minutes, it was all over. The remaining 33 minutes were just a formality.
I'll credit the Spartans for playing hard throughout the second half when the
outcome had already been decided. It was an incredible ride that no one in Michigan
will forget for some time. But this is Carolina's time.
Congrats to Tyler, Ty, Wayne, Danny and Good Ol' Roy - you left no
doubts as to who was the best team in college basketball.
