AP source: Former Illini Head signs at SMU
Former Illinois reserve Crandall Head has signed to play with SMU.
An SMU official familiar with Head's decision said he signed his paperwork Thursday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because Head's decision hasn't been announced by the school.
The 6-4, 190-pound Head will have to sit out a year under NCAA rules. He has two more years of eligibility...

Today’s NBA Draft Blog Scouting Report looks at a big man with a lot of potential, Illinois’ Meyers Leonard. Leonard is 7’1 and athletic for his size, but he still needs to improve a lot of areas of his game, on both ends of the floor. Will his potential and size be enough to get him into the lottery? Let’s take a look at Meyers Leonard:

Fighting Illini Meyers Leonard and Possibly Brandon Paul Declare for the 2012 NBA Draft
Earlier this week, Monday, Center Meyers Leonard made it public that he will be entering the NBA draft this season. Many feel though it is a dream of his that the money he makes and the opportunities he gets will help his mother, who is very sick.
Brandon Paul is still undecided on whether or not he will be following his teammate to a career in the NBA.
This past season, Leonard...

Illinois, the “top ten” job that no one wants
About five minutes after Bruce Weber was shown the door in Champagne we heard the most hyperbolic statement ever. “Illinois Fighting Illini is a top ten job.” That statement of idiocy came from the usually reasonable and prudent mind of CBS and Sports Illustrated’s Seth Davis. Sadly, he said that one live television too.
It has become so common place in college...

Evaluating John Groce to Illinois
As I write this, John Groce to Illinois is not yet a done deal. But the Internet is running fast and furious with it, and the Internet is never wrong. Right?
Anyway, who is this John Groce character? We know he's D.J.Cooper's coach. We know he beat Michigan and South Florida to make the Sweet-16. But what about his style? What should Illinois fans expect?
As usual, it all...

Brad Stevens is Staying at Butler, Not Going to Illinois
In case you haven’t been paying attention over the past few years, Butler head basketball coach Brad Stevens really likes his job. No, I mean he really likes his job.
For the third-straight offseason, Stevens has been pursued for a major conference job opening (or multiple major conference openings) and has refused to leave the small school he has helped raise to basketball relevance...

Illini Meyers Leonard and Brandon Paul testing NBA Draft waters
The 2011-12 Illinois Fighting Illini alpha dog (Brandon Paul) and second banana (Meyers Leonard) have submitted their names to the NBA’s undergraduate advisory committee to receive feedback on their draft stock. Therefore, they will have the chance to receive feedback from NBA scouts on their game, but still retain the ability to return to school next season.
I think I know what...

Bye Bye Bruce
It was hard to find a non-derpy picture of Bruce Weber, and that’s appropriate for the end of his Illinois coaching career.
Weber’s firing was announced at a press conference this morning and the hot talk is about Reggie Theus taking the job, with VCU’s Shaka Smart a fun name to speculate on. New Illini AD Mike Thomas has fired the head football coach, the head...

Gophers vs. Illini starts key three game stretch
A big game on a cold January Saturday night. What could be better?
This space is usually reserved for disclaimers that there is no such thing as a must win game in January and platitudes about how a season isn't over until it's over because of the automatic NCAA tournament bid awarded at the end of the Big Ten Tournament. Nope, I'm not going to do it this time. This...

Illini Most Super Sophomore: Joseph Bertrand!
What a loaded and deep sophomore class the Illini were to have this year! McDonald’s All-American Jereme Richmond, consensus top 90 recruit Crandall Head, 7-footer/future NBA big Meyers Leonard and overlooked Sterling, Illinois product Joseph Bertrand.
Well, look at where we are today: Richmond caused as many headaches and issues as possible before leaving school after one...

Univ Of Illinois Guard Crandall Head To Transfer: Illini Run Shooting Offense. He’s Not A Shooter
Fans of the University of Illinois men’s basketball team (and Big Ten basketball) probably remember the name Luther Head. He was an Associated Press Second-Team All-American, member of the Big Ten All-Tournament team, selected to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team, and was 5th in the conference in scoring (15.9) as a senior in [...]

Big Ten First Look: Illinois
This was the first item on a Google Image Search for Bruce WeberPerhaps no team in the Big 10 was hollowed out in the off-season to the degree of the Fighting Illini. Between long-time starters Demetri McCamey, Mike Davis, and Mike Tisdale, senior role player Bill Cole, and one-and-done Jereme Richmond (who, painfully, went undrafted), lose four starters, five of their top seven...

Illinois 67, Loyola of Chicago 49
Meyers Leonard scored 15 points and had six blocks and Brandon Paul added 14 points to lead Illinois to a 67-49 season-opening win over Loyola Chicago on Friday.
Leonard, a 7-foot-1 sophomore, had nine points by halftime and hit the first 3-pointer of his career for the Illini. Paul overcame a cold-shooting first half in which he scored two points to lead Illinois.
Paul's 3...
