Found July 15, 2008 on Chiefs Gab:
To date only three of the 12 draft choices for the Chiefs have signed on the dotted line. For once Carl Peterson should have lost the battle of the contract negotiation. To win the war of having everybody in camp on time. I would understand if we had a lot of bloated contracts and were trying to stay under the cap. But the Chiefs are well under the cap. Projected some where around 25 million in cap space one of the highest figures in the league. So what are they waiting for at One Arrow Head Dr. Are the agents being ridiculous? That would be a difficult situation to envision since three fourths of the 12 picks were third round or later. After the first round players and agents know it?s pretty much a slotting system and they all ready know for the most part what their contract will be. To put this procrastination in perspective the Dolphins are undergoing a similar rebuilding effort and have 7 out of their 9 picks signed why the disparity? The most pathetic part is we have not even signed our two seventh round picks. How can you sign a herd of undrafted rookie free agents and not know how much your going to pay your two seventh round picks? The Chiefs already signed sixth round pick Barry Richardson. You could assume one would just pay the seventh round picks just a little bit less than the sixth rounder. I wont fault Carl for Dorsey and Albert remaining unsigned. Dorsey probably wont sign till Chris Long and Vernon Gholston sign their deals. So he can measure his dollar value. Dorsey has been vocal in his desire to get in camp on time that should help in contract talks. Brandon Albert will be a little more of a tricky situation because Albert slid in the draft and feels as if he is a top ten talent. Carl wont pay the 15th pick in the draft top ten money. In addition Albert played guard in college and only played two games at left tackle. Does Albert want to be paid like a true left tackle when he still may end up playing anywhere on the line.. Even though he will start out at left tackle. If I had to place a bet I would say this is the last draft choice signed. Nine picks are unsigned with 10 days to go. There is just no way the Chiefs get to training camp with out a hold out. The Chiefs are going to miss a golden opportunity to have every one on the same page from day one. It?s kind of like the visa commercials rookie contract a couple million. Having a cohesive unit priceless.
