The college football season has completed roughly a third of their games and it’s time to start figuring out who the Heisman contenders are.  While I would like to be fair all the other contenders, as of right now the Heisman is Geno Smiths to lose.  Smith has looked impressive in all four of West Virginia games.  His stats are ridiculous and this past weekend he seemed video game esq. Smith threw 8 touchdowns, that’s right I said 8.  He had more touchdowns than incompletions, only allowing six of his 51 passes to hit the ground.  He hasn’t thrown an interception and has shown a ton of athleticism.  Through only four games Geno Smith have thrown the ball 169 times with 20 of the passes resulting in touchdowns and only throwing 28 incompletions, those are insane numbers. The Mountaineers head into Austin this week for another shoot out with the Longhorns.  Geno still has three ranked opponents left to showcase his passing ability.  Next, I feel like you have to look at De’Anthony Tho...

Road Trip Week 3: Five reasons I'm excited for Austin

It’s time now to turn the page. If you read the recap of my recent trip to Lincoln, Nebraska – the second leg of the MSF-La Quinta College Football Road Trip – you know how much fun I had spending the weekend with one of my favorite people in what is now one of my favorite college towns. And this came on the heels of a similarly great weekend in Norman, Oklahoma with my little...

QB Geno Smith: I can play better

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- It's tough to identify the most impressive thing about West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith's game on Saturday, when he led his team to a win over Baylor in the Mountaineers' first conference tilt as a member of the Big 12. Most might say it was the sheer absurdity of his stat line, and oh, was it one to behold. Unabated by a Bears defense that let...

West Virginia’s Geno Smith: early Heisman front-runner

With a dominant performance that included 656 passing yards and eight touchdowns, West Virginia’s Geno Smith has earned Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week honors. Smith’s record-breaking afternoon helped guide the Mountaineers to a 70-63 win over the Baylor Bears.    While leading his team to their inaugural Big 12 Conference victory, the senior was nearly unstoppable...

Just Give Geno Smith the Heisman

The 2012 Heisman ceremony takes place in New York on December 10th. What are we waiting for? Do we really need two more months of games to decide that West Virginia QB Geno Smith is the "most outstanding" player in college football? Was there a voter in the country that watched his performance against Baylor and thought, "This Smith kid is good, but let&...

West Virginia Mountaineers at Texas Longhorns College Football Week 6 Big 12 Preview

Getty Images Follow @Dan Vasta This weekend is loaded with premier BCS-caliber football games and this is another one you better not miss. Geno Smith is coming off one of the greatest performances in the BCS era, throwing for 8 TD and 656 yards. The Baylor defense is nowhere near as good as the Longhorns, so this matchup will be electric to watch. Think essentially Clemson-Florida...

West Virginia-Texas Preview

What if No. 8 West Virginia and No. 11 Texas played Saturday and decided not to bring their defenses? At the rate those two have been giving up big plays for touchdowns, would it really matter? The Mountaineers (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) needed every one of quarterback Geno Smith's eight touchdown passes in last week's 70-63 win over Baylor that left its defense looking as bad as...

College Football Podcast: Previewing two SEC showdowns and West Virginia's trip to Texas

Since the college football schedule was announced many months ago, several looked to Week 6 as one of the defining ones of the season. Several key games dot the schedule, including two SEC showdowns which could eventually determine not only this conference, but also the National Championship race as well, in addition to West Virginia’s first road trip in the Big XII. And on Wednesday...

NCAA FB: Geno Smith This Year’s Robert Griffin III In Heisman Trophy Chase?

In 2011, the NCAA Football world was talking about a quarterback from the Pac 12 conference, a running back from Oregon and a player who does not tie his shoelaces. None of them won the Heisman Trophy. Entering 2012, the pundits were once again talking about a top quarterback from the Pac 12, a running back from Oregon and a quarterback who does not tie his shoelaces. And once again...

Early Analysis: West Virginia vs. Texas

No. 7 West Virginia at No. 9 Texas Saturday, 7:00 PM Fox Line: West Virginia – 6.5 The Mountaineers and Longhorns clash in a top ten Big 12 matchup that will help to separate the conference’s elite from the upper-middle class. We know West Virginia can put points up in bunches and Texas is no slouch, but let’s talk defense (or lack thereof). West Virginia’s...

Introduction to Big 12 football is an exhausting experience

Following another West Virginia touchdown, a fan at Saturday’s game stood up and uttered the most prophetic words of the day. “For everyone talking (crap) about our defense, it could be worse. We could have Baylor’s defense,” said the unknown fan just one row in front of me. He was right, but not by much. WVU scored 10 touchdowns, including eight via Geno Smith...
