PLAYERS: Jameis Winston
TEAMS:
Week 6 of college football is in the books, and the 2013 Heisman Watch is now closer than ever thanks to some standout performances this last weekend. Newsflash: the quarterbacks of 2013 are damn good. Here’s the new updated list: 5. Andy Murray, Georgia / Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M: I couldn’t decide which one of these SEC quarterbacks should be my no. 5, but I did know they both deserve to be on the list. Murray and the Bulldogs escaped defeat against the Tennessee Vol’s on Saturday thanks to an overtime Tennessee fumble. Regardless, Murray still had a solid game, completing 19-of-35 attempts for 196 yards and three touchdowns. Georgia has had one hell of a schedule, and Murray has led them to victory against difficult opponents like South Carolina, LSU and Tennessee. The only game he didn’t throw a touchdown, the Bulldogs lost to Clemson by 3. Expect big things from Murray in the future. Johnny, Johnny, Johnny. I once again begrudgingly put you in my top 5, even though I adamantly believe your off-the-field-antics will keep you from taking home the hardware for a second straight year. Mr. Football had a bye week this weekend, but his season long numbers don’t lie: 100-140, 1,489 yards, 14 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. The 4 picks through 5 games is troublesome, seeing as he only had 9 in the 2012 season. He’s playing good football, and A&M’s only loss came to Alabama this season, making him more than qualified to be in the running for the Heisman once again. 4. Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville: Teddy Ballgame looks good this year. He looks very, very good. But, you know who doesn’t look good? His opponents. This weekend Bridgewater went 25-of-38 for 348 yards and 2 touchdowns. These are good numbers, but it’s not like the now 0-5 Temple Owls put up much of a fight. The Cardinals undoubtedly have the easiest schedule of any top 10 team, so if Bridgewater wants to hoist the hardware in New York City, he’s going to need to do this and more against his cupcake schedule to win over the voters. 3. Jameis Winston, Florida State: Jameis Winston led Florida State to a 63-0 win over Maryland with 5 touchdowns (Photo courtesy of Jacksonville.com) Famous Jameis Winston did it again this weekend, leading Florida State in their downright, brutally offensive, no mercy SHELLACKING of former no. 25 Maryland. Winston went 23-of-32 for 393 yards and 5 touchdowns, leading the Seminoles to a 63-0 beat down of the Terrapins. The freshman showed no regard for human life when he brought the hammer down on Saturday, and really proved he isn’t just a flash-in-the-pan for the 2013 season. His performance this weekend lands him at no. 3 on my list, and also gives some light to my theory that he could be the next Johnny Manziel.  2. Tajh Boyd, Clemson: Syracuse isn’t the cream-of-the-crop as far as defenses go, and Boyd took advantage of that fact this weekend. The Clemson quarterback completed 20-of-27 attempts for 455 yards and five touchdowns. Boyd also threw two interceptions against the Orange, his only two interceptions of the year. His 14-to-2 touchdown to interception ratio is what’s got him at no. 2, and the fact that the no. 1 is somehow finding a way to one-up him. 1. Marcus Mariota, Oregon: Mariota has been as good as you can be this season, and he kept the trend alive this weekend completing 16-of-27 passes for 355 yards and five touchdowns. His numbers for the season are as follows: 76-134, 1,358 yards, 14 touchdowns, 0 interceptions. On the ground, he’s just as good: 28 carries, 338 yards, 7 touchdowns, 0 fumbles. Mariota has 21 touchdowns and 0 turnovers, leading the nations 2nd ranked offense that scores 59.2 points per game. Not bad, future Mr. Heisman, not bad. Don’t agree with my rankings?
