The 2013 NFL draft is already being talked about as having the fewest potential superstars in any draft in recent history. When the best quarterback is Geno Smith and he could fall out of the first round, you know things are a little different than what we have seen over the past decade. There is some debate as to the best running back in the 2013 draft. The majority opinion seems to be that Eddie Lacy out of Alabama, who backed up Trent Richardson, will be the first back taken this year. I have also seen Montee Ball from Wisconsin talked about as a better fit for a few teams and potentially the first back taken.Lacy actually may fall out of the first round all together because teams look at the overall value at the position and do not see a huge drop from Lacy to his counterparts. This is yet to be determined. What we can say with some certainty is that there are still a number of teams in the NFL that could use a workhorse back like Lacy to ground and pound the ball as a starter from day one. With more and more teams utilizing a running back by committee approach, one could argue that just about any team could go after the talents of Eddie Lacy. But why spend a first rounder or an early second on a running back that you plan to only be a small part of a committee? No, the team that takes Lacy will do so because they want an impact player from day one. There are five teams that I believe will give Lacy a serious look on day one or early on day two as the first or second running back selected. They have the right mix of need at the position, style of play, and would utilize Lacy from day one.
