Geno Smith played in his final game as the starting quarterback for the West Virginia Mountaineers in the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium before he prepares for the 2013 NFL Draft. Suffice to say, things did not go how Smith would have scripted his final college football game of his great career.
It was one thing for the high powered offense of the Mountaineers to get stifled by the Syracuse Orange in a 38-14 embarrassment, but it was another for Smith to make some key mistakes that cost his team a shot at a victory. That was not how we wanted to go out, especially when you consider that he was a Heisman Trophy favorite after the first month of the 2012 college football season.
If you look at his final stat line, then things do not appear as bleak for Smith. He completed 16 of 26 passes for 197 passing yards and two touchdown passes to Stedman Bailey. But he was also sacked in the end zone in the first half and called for intentional grounding in the end zone in the second hal...
BEST OF MAXIM
The Weirton Daily Times in Weirton, West Virginia didn’t mean for this typo to get into the Sunday paper. Or… perhaps they did. Either way, this “accidental” bit of word greatness accurately sums up the Pinstripe Bowl and the season half of West Virginia’s 2012 season as well. Graphic… but spot on. Please, someone get [...]
For some, not every bowl game is worth watching. But we all saw what West Virginia did to Clemson in last year's Orange Bowl, a 70-33 blowout win for the Mountaineers. This season, WVU started 5-0 behind ridiculous play from QB Geno Smith. However, due to their horrendous defense, ranked 116th in points allowed, West Virginia slid to just 7-5 before qualifying for the Pinstripe...
It's a question West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen didn't particularly want to answer after his team's 38-14 loss to Syracuse in Saturday's Pinstripe Bowl.
But as the curtain closed, amid a raging snowstorm, on a fruitless 7-6 season that no one could've foreseen, it's one that begged to be asked.
What the heck happened to the Mountaineers?
See, it wasn...
The official Twitter account of the Orange Bowl took a shot at West Virginia over last year's game. See the clever joke here.
Tempers flared in the snow between the Big 12 West Virginia Mountaineers and the Big East Syracuse Orange. This field in complete snow with all the players wrapped up in gear to keep them kind of warm. Patches of snow are left on the ground and player’s breathes can be seen even on your home television. Would that stop these teams from a pre-game brawl? Absolutely not. The New...
West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins has never been one to hold back his feelings or emotions. Those feelings boiled over again today following the Mountaineers 74-67 win over Eastern Kentucky. Although WVU has won three straight, they haven’t been pretty. Just when Huggs thinks his team has turned the corner, he’s left [...]
Whoever is running the @OrangeBowl definitely doesn’t lack a sense of humor. In last years’ Orange Bowl, the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the Clemson Tigers 70 to 33 in what was a complete blow out. West Virginia subsequently put up a billboard to display the score of the game that also happened to be their speed limit. Well, whoever is running the Orange Bowl’s Twitter...
It’s well documented West Virginia and Syracuse are long time foes. But when they line up against one another in the Pinstripe Bowl, Geno Smith won’t have to deal with one very familiar face. He should be thrilled about that. Last year’s incredible Syracuse demolition of WVU at the Carrier Dome helped vault Chandler Jones into the first round. So how different will it be for...

Despite the fact that two 7-5 teams are playing each other, this game is very intriguing. You have a West Virginia squad that spurned the Big East in favor of the Big 12 playing against a Syracuse team that is a...

What is the point spread in the West Virginia and Syracuse game? West Virginia is a 3.5 point favorite (a tick more at some places) against Syracuse...
For one half, Bob Huggins thought this West Virginia team actually resembled one that he would coach. In the second half against Eastern Kentucky, though, the Mountaineers frustrated their head coach by reverting to old habits.
Pinstripe Bowl: West Virginia (7-5) vs. Syracuse (7-5)
Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib
For a game featuring two 7-5 teams, this year’s Pinstripe Bowl will feature several solid prospects. West Virginia has one of the best and most explosive passing attacks in the nation, and is led by QB Geno Smith and WR’s Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey. Smith (6’3, 220 lbs.; 4,001 passing yards...
