SMU was the second-smallest school in the Southwest Conference, and one of the smallest in Division I-A, with a total enrollment of just over 9,000 students in 1986.After attempts to recruit top high school players using contemptible methods, SMU was placed on probation five times between 1974 and 1985, and had been slapped with probation seven times overall -- more than any other school. On February 25, the committee voted unanimously to cancel SMU's entire 1987 football season and all four of SMU's scheduled home games in 1988. This was the last the public had heard of the SMU Football program, and has since been obliterated from the spotlight.24 years later, the SMU football team is thriving, and itching to get national attention once again. When running back Zach Line was recruited in 2009 by SMU, they saw potential, and utilized him as a short-yardage back in his freshman season.Line accounted for seven touchdowns in his freshman campaign, and set the tone for his career at SMU. In his next three years at Southern Methodist, Line has accounted for 20 100+ yard games as the starting SMU running back.Line has accounted for 1,438 yards of total offense this season alone, and has carried SMU to a possible winning record, pending their "Sheraton Hawaii" Bowl game against the Fresno State Bulldogs December 24th.Line has brought SMU back to their winning traditions, and has high hopes exiting Dallas, and heading to New York for the 2013 NFL Draft this April. Possessing great size at 6-1, 230 pounds, he can be used highly-effectively as a change-of-pace back in the National Football League. No matter his success in the NFL, Zach Line will always be remembered as the silent warrior, that dug the SMU Mustangs out of the black hole formed by Ron Meyer in 1981. Line has been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, while also being a preseason canidate for the famous Doak Walker Award.
